In order to advance the sustainability of residential construction in the Chattanooga market, they embarked on actually developing a series of zero energy capable homes at market rate, with traditional residential development finance, and sold the homes on the open market to demonstrate the practical, effective, and affordable strategies in the Southeast United States. They used every stage of the development to educate the entire supply chain of how homes are built from lenders, appraisers, and realtors to architects, contractors, and subcontractors. Michael will walk through the most successful strategies they identified both during the project and since to delivering cost-competitive sustainable homes to the market.

Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Bridge Deck Slabs using Ground Penetrating Radars

Sponsored by: American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) - WV Section

Presented by: Wael Zatar

Time: 3/23/2022 10:00:00 – 3/23/2022 11:00:00

Location: Parlor A

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has recently gained momentum to nondestructively detect embedded objects and defects in concrete structures. The quality of the scans and reconstructed images are directly correlated to the dimensions and depths of the concrete defects and embedded objects, as well as the frequencies of the GPR antennas. Laboratory reinforced concrete slabs, with embedded defects and objects, were constructed and nondestructively tested. Four GPR antennas of 400, 900, 1600, and 2600 MHz were used in the nondestructive testing. Objects in the concrete slabs include #3 to #8 rebars located at different depths and various artificial voids and delaminated areas. Synthetic aperture focusing technique was applied to effectively interpret the GPR data, as well as to improve both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional reconstructed images. The study concluded that all four antennas could detect the embedded objects near the concrete slab surface. It was observed that the higher the frequency of the antenna the better the quality and sharpness of the reconstructed images. GPR signal attenuation assisted in concluding a varying detectability scale for embedded objects in concrete slabs.

Are you able to answer the following questions for each of your firm’s projects?
1. What are your project risks?
2. Who is responsible for those risks?
3. What are the warning indicators?
4. What is the likelihood that an event will occur?
5. What is the potential magnitude of each risk?
6. What are the key assumptions that drive the risk event?
7. What is the best strategy for managing the risk?

The Existing Buildings comprise 98% of the building stock globally and are the primary reason that the CBECS Energy Utilization Indices (EUIs) have been steadily increasing since 1999. This presentation will present a comprehensive step-wise sequence for achieving various levels of increased energy efficiency from an existing building’s current EUI situation to a 15% or 30% improvement, to bringing the building to the level of energy efficiency up to the current 90.1 Standard requirements to an ultimate energy savings target of achieving a 30% increased energy efficiency over 90.1. Economic scenarios and business-case based examples will be presented for these various energy savings levels as well as detailed explanation of how the technical retro-commissioning process should be used to develop both short-term and long-term strategies in achieving the sought energy savings levels.

De-icing chemicals utilized throughout the state are placed on bridges and are absorbed – resulting in cracking, spalling, delamination and failure of these structures. From a maintenance standpoint, both the superstructure and substructure of the bridges is complex to maintain, repair, or replace. This presentation will review local case studies throughout West Virginia and the area where concrete repairs were conducted using a variety of different corrosion mitigation methods.

The Importance of Culture in a More Flexible Workplace

The Importance of Culture in a More Flexible Workplace

Sponsored by: American Institute of Architects - WV Chapter (AIA-WV)

Presented by: Evelyn Lee, FAIA, Practice of Architecture (VIRTUAL)

Time: 3/23/2022 14:00:00 – 3/23/2022 15:15:00

Location: Parlor B

The foundation to creating a practice that is adaptable to whatever the world throws your way is by intentionally developing a values-based culture. Good culture encourages respectful relationships where everyone knows and is excited about the common goals, they are working toward enabling the firm’s success. A values-driven culture is one where the values ultimately guide everything that the business does, from how they find and hire new people, how everyone interacts and works with one another daily, to how a firm grows and gets new work. The culture of a firm is akin to its fingerprint. It is its sole differentiator, the only thing that no other firm cannot replicate. Culture becomes the largest determinant for whether individuals choose to stay, how they show up each day, and how engaged they are in the work they do.

Time: 3/23/2022 14:00:00 – 3/23/2022 16:00:00

Location: Little Theater

Given 250 attendees and standing room only in 2019, the WV State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and the WV State Board of Professional Surveyors have teamed up once again to provide a unique presentation to satisfy a portion of not only the WV PE and PS license renewal needs but the new Ohio Engineering and Surveying Law requirement as well. Beginning with PE and PS registrations expiring in 2018 and beyond, the Ohio Board began requiring completion of at least two hours (of the thirty hours of continuing education required for biennial renewal) in professional ethics and/or laws/rules relevant to the practices of engineering or surveying. The same is true for the WV PS Board and therefore they have both agreed to accept this unique EXPO offering to satisfy their continuing education ethics requirements. Please join us as Lesley Rosier-Tabor, PE, Executive Director, and Edward Eagloski, Esq., Board Counsel, present a robust presentation that will fulfill professional development renewal needs for PEs and PSs licensed in both states.

Slope failures along roadways, failures of retaining walls and deteriorating bridge abutments along our nation’s roadways present a real challenge to engineers, planners and designers. These problems strain diminishing maintenance budgets, and many of the “traditional” repair methods are difficult to employ on smaller rural roads without disturbance to environmentally sensitive streams or private property and along developed roads without impacting existing utilities or requiring the removal and disposal of failing infrastructure. In this presentation, we will outline some innovative geohazard mitigation methods and technologies that provide an economical solution while achieving standard engineering design life requirements. Relevant technologies include soil nailing, micropiles, and geosynthetically-confined soil (GCS) walls.

Whether for residential, commercial, or industrial projects, regardless of fixed development or linear projects, land surveys serve as the backbone and planning reference for project execution. Developers need to understand the “where” of property rights, before designing and constructing the “what”? Technology advances in the survey industry, across many platforms, have increased efficiency, accuracy, and project knowledge for companies. Drone usage is now commonly-used, LIDAR for topography, and 3-D renderings of proposed projects. So too, the industry advances in extracting specific property data from public records has made landowner identification and negotiations a much less labor-intensive task. This presentation is intended to encourage attendees to think beyond the Gunter’s chain and a measuring wheel, and move into future possibilities.

Shifting energy codes are challenging architects with a wide array of parameters to balance like energy, cost, daylight, views, and embodied carbon. Hiring a consultant for every kind of analysis is a burden on fees. Many architects are harnessing simulation to shape the design and details of their projects. To be successful, teams must understand the levers that impact the performance and set up processes for success. Join this session diving into two case studies to generate beautiful analysis graphics and see how to shape the narrative in a data driven design process.
